Christmas Island ~ Abbott's Booby

Abbott's Booby (Papasula abbotti), is an endangered seabird of the sulid family, which includes gannets and boobies. It is the largest bird of the family, and is placed within its own monotypic genus. It was first identified from a specimen collected by William Louis Abbott, who discovered it on Assumption island in 1892.


Romania ~ Dalmatian Pelican

The Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus Crispus), is a massive member of the pelican family. It breeds from southeastern Europe to India and China in swamps and shallow lakes. The nest is a crude heap of vegetation. This huge bird is the largest of the pelicans and one of the largest living bird species.


St Helena ~ Wirebird

The Saint Helena Plover (Charadrius sanctaehelenae), locally known as Wirebird due to its thin legs, is a small wader endemic to the island of Saint Helena. The bird was first mentioned in 1638, and is the national bird of Saint Helena, featured on the island's coat of arm and flag.

The Eurasian Curlew (Numenius arquata), it is one of the most widespread of the curlews, breeding across temperate Europe and Asia. In Europe this species is often referred to just as the "curlew", and in Scotland known as the "whaup" in Scots.

The Ortolan Bunting (Emberiza hortulana), is a bird in the bunting family Emberizidae, a passerine family now separated by most modern authors from the finches, Fringillidae. Ortolan nest are placed on or near the ground, the egg seldom show the hair-like markings so characteristic of most buntings' eggs.

Indonesia ~ Threatened Bird Species

The Siau Scops Owl (Otus siaoensis), is a critically endangered owl and may be extinct. They live in Siau Island, north of Sulawesi, Indonesia and are (were) forest dwellers.

The Flores Hawk Eagle (Nisaetus floris), is a fairly large, up to 30 - 31 inch long, raptor in the family Accipitridae. An Indonesian endemic, the Flores Hawk Eagle is distributed in forests of Flores, Lombok and Sumbawa in the Lesser Sundas.

The Elegant Sunbird (Aethopyga duyvenbodei), an Indonesian endemic distributed to the island of Sangihe, north of Sulawesi. It is found and locally common in the forests and plantations near Mount Sahendaruman in southern Sangihe.

The Invisible Rail (Habroptila wallacii), is a flightless species of bird in the family Rallidae, endemic only to the island of Halmahera, in North Maluku, Indonesia, especially its swamp forests, wetlands, and forest edges. It is the world's smallest living flightless bird.

Malaysia ~ Wild Ducks

Malaysia 2006, Wild Duck Species s/s, The Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) known as The Great Black Cormorant across the Northern Hemisphere and The Black Shag further south in New Zealand, is a widespread member of the cormorant family of seabirds. It breeds much in the Old World and the Atlantic coast of North America.

Indonesia ~ Brahminy Kite

Indonesia 1997, National Love Flora and Fauna Day s/s. The Brahminy Kite (Haliastur Indus) also known as the Red-backed Sea-eagle in Australia, is a medium-sized bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, which also includes many other diurnal raptors such as eagles, buzzards and harriers. Known as Elang Bondol in Indonesia, the Brahminy Kite is the official mascot of Jakarta. In India it is considered as the contemporary representation of Garuda, the sacred bird of Vishnu.

Canada ~ Bird Cover

The Great Blue Heron, is Canada's largest heron, Observers most often see this stately bird in shallow water and usually nests in the top of a tall tree.

The Snow Goose, is one of the few birds whose numbers have increased since the year 1900. It breeds in the high Arctic tundra and prefers areas covered with a few inches of water where it grubs for the roots of rushes and marsh grasses.

The Spruce Grouse, lives almost exclusively in Canada, and is widely distributed in the forest areas. It dines on the needles and buds of coniferous trees and enjoy berries.

The Great Horned Owl, inhabits all of Canada south of the tree line. This large, powerful bird hunts at night or dusk. It preys mostly on rabbits, mice, rats, skunks and scorpions. This bird does not make its own nest, but takes over one built by a crow, hawk or heron.
